Book Review – The Union Quilters by Jennifer Chiaverini

Long time readers will know that I review each of Jennifer Chiaverini’s Elm Creek Quilts series as I read them. I’ve just finished The Union Quilters and it is as interesting a read as her previous books.

This one travels back in time, taking place during the Civil War. The trials and tribulations of both soldiers and the women and families left behind to carry on, remind us that although the times and methods change, much remains the same. Soldiers still go into battle, and families are still left to manage without them.

In Water’s Ford, Pennsylvania, the Bergstrom family do their part. The women of Elm Creek Valley start a quilting bee to raise money to support both their wounded veterans and their men in battle, providing food, clothing, and other necessities. They even build a hall and assert their right as women, to own and manage it.

I could, of course, share more of the story with you, but I won’t. Best to read and discover it all for yourself.
